I have not bought hot dog buns in ages! My family is not always the biggest fan of that, but we have come up with some fun alternatives. But now that we avoid grains, and I rarely buy any kind of gluten-free breads, it is clearly time to think outside the bun. We had a few ideas of our own, like my sweet potato bun back in January, then my uncorn corn dog cake pops based on a blog by my friend at Butter In My Coffee, then we made some fun pepperoni pizza bite wrapped mini dogs, and then Flame to Fork’s radical idea to use the #hotdogasthebun from Instagram this summer.
We have had a lot of fun with those lately. I have one new option up my sleeve that we are working on for tonight, all I can say is that it involves mug cakes…check back later for details. I think it is going to be a kid-pleaser!
Now, a little tough love about hot dogs: they are NOT all made equal. PLEASE buy clean hot dogs. By clean, I mean know your dog. Read the labels. And please, please, please buy grass-fed, organic, gluten-free, nitrate free, sugar-free, etc. If you can’t pronounce an ingredient, DO NOT BUY IT. That should actually go for all your food though, too. I also only buy beef dogs, but that’s just a preference.I am a huge fan of Applegate options, which are available at places like Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s, as well as Target, and some savvy grocery stores, like my local Save Marts.
