GIRD YOUR LOINS! It. Is. Coming.
PSL is here! (for the not so pumpkin/Starbucks savvy, that stands for Pumpkin Spice Latte)
It’s that time of year again, you know, when Starbucks turns everyone on the planet into insane Pumpkin Spice Everything Lovers. The other day I read that the BUX is releasing their Pumpkin Spice drinks on August 25th, earlier than ever. Dear God. Really? The funny thing is, it’s SUMMER. It’s freaking HOT, why the H_E_L_L do you want a hot Pumpkin Spice anything right now, when you are still wearing flip flops, dreaming of the beach, and planning how to survive the heat until the end of October? Some people’s kids aren’t even back in school yet, so the idea of Fall anything seems extreme to me. You didn’t even know you wanted it to be Fall in August, until you heard that you could get PSL tomorrow on Facebook, right?
Honesty moment, I want one. I want one every year! Last year was no exception, except PSL was released on August 30, and I was smack in the middle of my first WHOLE 30! On a diet with no dairy, no sugar, no sweeteners, etc. the PSL was a NO-NO! In other words, T.O.R.T.U.R.E. While I worked that day, I spent my whole day dreaming of how to go home and make one, albeit Whole 30 Compliant. And if you are a regular reader of my blog, you’ll know that I tend to obsess about a recipe when I am developing a new idea. I spent all day at work dreaming about the PSL. All Day. But I did manage to come up with a few ideas and fill my need, as well as develop a taste for a different and healthier version. In all of 2013, I had ONE PSL from Starbucks, which is my personal record. Normally, we have to take out a second mortgage to pay for all my PSLs of the season, no joke.
Let this serve as a PUMPKIN SPICE INTERVENTION. I am here to help you save yourself from PSL.
So, here are a few of my Pumpkin Spice recipes. I hope you find something to fill a need or want, and a way to have it more simply, healthy, and deliciously. You don’t need to be drinking that Sbux crap, it really is quite awful for you. And, please do not write to me that you have having it with soy, lowfat, or sugar-free, because that’s another rant I am not ready to go on yet. Now is the time to take back your heath AND your pocketbook, and get a little creative and save some money. $5 a drink is STUPID, people. It really is.
HOMEMADE PUMPKIN SPICE (You need this in your life!)
This is pretty basic, and you CAN buy it in a store, but you can make it with ingredients you probably have on hand already.
Just in time for making holiday meals and pumpkin spice everything, homemade pumpkin pie spice! I love it in my coffee, but you can use it in any recipe that calls for pumpkin pie spice!
- 4 tbsp ground cinnamon
- 4 tsp ground ginger
- 4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 3 tsp ground all spice
Mix together and store in jars! Easy peasy! Easy peasy Paleo!
Just add it to your coffee, as is, or combine it with Gingerbread Spice Mix, for a festive flavor! Get a little creative with your home-brewed coffee, or take it with you on-the-go, for a cheaper and better for you version of popular holiday drinks!
You are also going to need to know How To Roast A Pumpkin!
And how about Whole 30 Pumpkin Spice Lattes!? Also, these have no sugar, no dairy, no junk, no crap, low carb, blah, blah, Paleo. You are really gonna want to drink this.
Pumpkin Custard anyone?
PUMPKIN DONUTS?! WITH chocolate glaze?! You know you do!
I hope you found this early enough in the season, before you OD’d on Pumpkin Spice everything. I hope you found this before you derailed your health plan or made your situation worse. I know PSL is good and tasty, I also know it can make you feel horrible. And I also know that you can make it yourself and cheaper with a little ingenuity.
