I get asked a lot what to snack on. One of the things I’ve learned after going thru three Whole 30s is not to snack, or at least snack less. But to be reasonable, we all find ourselves in a snacky place sometimes and there are great ways to make better choices. One way I like to prevent myself from making poor choices is to have emergency rations that keep me on track, for not just myself, but my kids and hubby, too.
My kids get a snack, or two, for school each day, and I always have something stashed in my purse. I don’t store food in my car here because it’s so hot and car temps can be bad for food quality and taste, that goes for bottled water as well.
So, as per requested by a lot of people, here’s a sneak at what we have as grab-n-go eats. Keep in mind, we keep this to a minimum, or none, but we always encourage fresh fruits or veggies first if we are home instead.
Always a great choice. I eat the classics, try to avoid any of the ones with additives, chocolate and never peanuts. Family favorites are Key Lime, Coconut, Blueberry, Carrot Cake, and Cappucino. Ingredients are usually just dates, nuts, fruit. Whole30 compliant. Best places to find: Target, Vitacost, Walmart, Health Food Stores like Whole Foods and Trader Joes, and sometimes Costco.
Enjoy Life Bars
These are really tasty and my kids like them. They do contain some cane syrup, so we don’t eat them often. We take them camping, hiking, on road trips, etc. NOT Whole 30 Compliant. Best places to buy: Vitacost, health food stores, and a lot of grocery stores carry them too. Gluten-free, dairy-free, and Kosher.
Buffalo meat snacks. I love the spicy ones, but the orange and cranberry are yummy, too! Ingredients: buffalo meat, fruit, peppers, a bit of cane crystals. NOT whole 30 compliant. I buy them at REI, online from Tanka and also online at vitacost.com when I have great coupons.
Bison, Beef, and Lamb bars. I buy them online at Vitacost when I get awesome coupons and then basically get beef jerky wasted on their awesomeness. My favorite is the Bison Uncured Bacon and Cranberry bar. Up there as another favorite is the Beef Habanero and Cherry. Go forth and meatify yourself!
NOTE ABOUT MEAT BARS: This is a good way to have a quick snack or a meal on the go. I am rather fond of these for breakfasts!
The best snack there is. So just follow that link above for the perfect way to make them. Just peel and eat. All I’d say about this, is that local is best, fresh is not for hardboiled. Organic, farm fresh, local, pastured, blah, blah, blah.
Organic Apple Chips
Just apples. That’s it. Good plain or with almond butter. Best place to find: Costco. Whole30 compliant.
Dried Fruits and Raw Nuts
Self explanatory. Buy smart, no crap ingredients, no sugars. Raw nuts are best, and dried fruit with no additives or sweeteners or sugar. Whole 30 compliant in small quantities, or rarely. Best places to find: bulk bins, local farms, Costco.
I buy a lot of different olives. My favorites are from my local farmers market by Adam’s Ranch, particularly stuffed olives. You can also get good olives in bulk at Costco, and these pictured here are from Trader Joe’s. We eat them plain or added to a meal. I like them any old way I can get them, but my kids do, too. Fairly simple snack, just open and go.
Mary’s Gone Crackers Gluten-free seed crackers
Not grain free, so tread lightly. Best and favorite crackers here. Made with ancient grains and great with nut butters, meat, guacamole, etc. Not Whole 30 compliant. Best place to buy: Costco.
Fruit Strips and Bars
Read labels! Read labels! Read labels! No added sugars or sweeteners in these, just fruits, BUT eat sparingly. Not Whole 30 recommended but I have used in case of blood sugar issues.
Unsweetened Apple Sauce
Read labels again! My favorite is organic plain apple Gogosqueez but these are ok, too. Make sure they are pure fruit, no additives or sweeteners. Secret: I put them in blended coffees for an added flavor. Make excellent apple spice lattes with Apple. Best place to buy: Costco and Target.
FRUITS AND VEGGIES, CRUNCHY IS BEST! AND SO IS COLOR!
Best way to curb a snack attack is with crunch. Crunchier the better. These are some of our favorites! Here’s a small post on snacking: There’s Nothing to EAT!
GRASSFED LOCAL BEEF STICKS AND JERKY
If you can find these, get them. Your local grassfed ranch probably makes them, mine does. These are from Springville, Ca and I buy them at my farmers market weekly, if I can get them. Delicious and easy to grab and go, but good to throw in a lunch box, too!
DUH, CHOCOLATE, AND DARKEST IS BEST.
I have actually been known to eat 100# dark cacao, but this is okay too. And unsweetened chocolate is NOT for the faint at heart. I’d say go soy-free and the least amount of sugar you can find. 60% or above, but I LOVE 85%.
OMGHEE, NUT BUTTERS, and COCONUT BUTTERS
Yep, I eat this by the spoonful. Don’t buy peanut butter, please. A good spoonful of fat will knock out a sugar craving FAST! Also helpful, an avocado. I love to make my own nut butters, too. It is really easy.
